TOC staff introduced Japanese Culture on Special School’s Multicultural Day

On 17th September, Sunnybank State Special School, located 15 minutes drive from the Oceania Centre, held a “Multicultural Day” once again aiming at deepening mutual understanding about different cultures from various countries and regions.
TOC staff, as voluntary assistants, have taken turns to visit the school a few days a week and engaged in hinokishin since April 2002. The school asked the Centre to introduce Japanese culture on this occasion, the same as before. On the “Multicultural day” which started from 11:00 a.m., three staff members from the Centre visited the school, and exhibited some panels, including Japanese woodblock prints, to introduce Japanese culture. They also introduced Japanese traditional toys such as Koma and Daruma-otoshi which attracted not only the children but also their parents who tried to play with them.

On top of that, wearing Yukata, they sang some Japanese songs like Kaeru-no Uta and Shiawasenara Tewo Tatako with hand movements, and finally enjoyed the Bon dance together, which gained much popularity. In addition, they provided participants with rolled Sushi made at the Centre, which was sold out first.
Valuing closer relationships with the students and teachers, we would like to dedicate ourselves to making a further contribution to the local community. Those who are interested in the program, please feel free to join us.
